Book Review: Presentation Zen
Thursday, 21 February 2008 00:00

Presentation ZenPresentations have been around for ages, PowerPoint has been around for two decades. In this short period business professionals, academics, and the like have managed to mire the software's reputation from an indispensable communication tool into an instrument of torture that inflicts more bouts of boardroom and confusion than a college calculus course. Garr Reynolds has made it his life's work to reverse the tides of ineffective communications by borrowing principles from eastern-thinking to improve stale presentations. Garr is a champion of clarity, meaning, and the zen-aesthetic in his revolutionary book Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (New Riders).

The book is inspired by his blog where he galvanizes a community reluctant to surrender to conventional wisdom. He challenges subscribers to express their innate creative talents to convey complex concepts into visual works of art by following straightforward suggestions to fine-tune their pitch. There are plenty of PowerPoint books on the market but this isn't a PowerPoint book! This is a wonderfully composed manual of style and craft that needs to be in your collection. He offers various techniques on design and delivery to polish a rough stone into a brilliant gem worthy of presentation. Garr doesn't push guidelines or standards of practice but offers an approach with an elegant balance of engaging content and creative flare. I've been a long time reader of the blog and waited anxiously for the release of the book and it didn't disappoint. I highly recommend this book for the seasoned veteran or the novice in need of a model for fresh ideas.
